What is Functional Medicine?

Dr Jeffery Bland co-founded the Institute for Functional Medicine in 1991 to teach physicians how to address the root causes of dis-ease. As a scientist, he believes the idea of function - be it physical, metabolic, cognitive or psychological - is how we can define and quantify health. The current medical model is poorly defined as disease is the absence of health. We must be able to quantify health in order to know how to get it! Every year the drug industry provides more “pills for our ills” and as a society we are becoming sicker, living shorter lives and with sometimes miserable depressed and anxious existences. Functional Medicine addresses the root cause of the imbalances in genetics, environmental factors, lifestyle choices and habits to create a quantifiable state of health.

How is a Functional Medicine Patient Treated?

Dr. Harrow treats by first alleviating symptoms to the best of science and ability, but at the same time seeking the reason for the symptoms. For example, with seasonal allergies, asking questions such as why is your immune system attacking the world you live in? Or what happened that caused your immune system to feel like it has to fight against this natural part of the world? Dr. Harrow will use genetic testing, blood/serum antibody testing, diet, environmental factors - all to see what your immune system is responding negatively to, so that this is the last season the allergic patient will suffer with itchy eyes and a watery nose.

The lifestyle choices (roots) you make, will determine the diseases you manifest (leaves).
